Gifts of Hope impacting children globally

World Vision’s Gifts of Hope brings global impact, offering joy and lasting change worldwide through thoughtful and transformative gifts.

In a heartwarming tale of generosity and meaningful giving, a five-year-old boy named Diwan in Malaysia is now the proud owner of a set of educational books, thanks to a thoughtful contribution from a fellow Malaysian through World Vision Malaysia’s Gifts of Hope (GOH) catalogue.

The annual GOH catalogue, initiated in 2005, offers a selection of curated and practical gifts aimed at making a significant impact on the lives of children and communities in need. Ranging from educational materials to livestock, each gift serves as a beacon of hope and a catalyst for lasting change.

Terry Leong, the CEO of World Vision Malaysia, emphasized the challenge of finding meaningful gifts during festive seasons. He noted, “Festive giving can be challenging. We all have bought and received gifts that are not exactly relevant. That was one of the reasons that prompted us to start the catalogue. GOH provides Malaysians with an alternative giving channel, one where we can give transformational and long-lasting gifts on behalf of our family and friends. This way, we know that it is money well spent.”

Over RM545,000 raised in 2022

In 2022, the generosity of Malaysians reached new heights, contributing over RM545,000 to the cause. This substantial amount enabled the delivery of life-changing gifts to vulnerable children, families, and communities across the globe.

The education sector received a significant boost, with 400 children under the age of six benefiting from Early Childhood Educational Packs containing books and learning materials. An additional 836 children, aged 6-18, received stationery packs, empowering them in their educational journey. Meanwhile, 200 households were provided with chickens, accompanied by training sessions on poultry farming. Additionally, 24 households received sewing machines, opening up opportunities for skills development.

Global Reach

At the community level, 118 farmers were trained and supported to start businesses in poultry farming, fish rearing, and crop planting. The catalogue also addressed hazards associated with contaminated water and poor sanitation by installing handwashing stations, piping systems, water pumps, and tanks.

Expressing gratitude, Terry Leong stated, “We are truly thankful to the generous Malaysians who have contributed to gifts from the catalogue. The gifts will not only bring joy, but their impact will continue to be felt in the years to come.”

As World Vision Malaysia launches its 2023 Gifts of Hope catalogue, one of the highlighted additions is the opportunity to contribute to birth registration and certificates. This annual initiative stands as a testament to the power of collective goodwill, illustrating that each gift has the potential to create a ripple effect of positive change in the lives of those in need.
