LRT linking Penang Island and Butterworth closer to reality

In a significant move towards the realisation of the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has initiated a call for tender to appoint a research consultant.

Zairil Khir Johari, the state infrastructure, transport, and digital development committee chairman, announced this development, elaborating that the LRT linking Penang island and Butterworth, is currently in the research stage, slated for completion in early 2024.

LRT project awaiting decision

Zairil responded to a written question on the progress of the LRT project from Penanti State Assemblyman Zulkefli Bakar during the Question and Answer Session during the 15th Penang State Legislative Assembly.

He clarified that the project’s implementation details with the completion of the research stage is anticipated early next year, providing essential insights into the LRT project.

“At this time, the implementation of the LRT project is awaiting the decision of the Ministry of Transport to finalize the implementation method and technical details, specifically in terms of alignment and the location of LRT stations.

Therefore, details regarding costs, implementation methods, and project start dates depend on the decision of the Ministry of Transport,” explained Zairil, who is also the Tanjong Bunga State Assemblyman.

Improving public transport coverage

Zairil Khir affirmed the state government’s commitment to advancing public transportation through the implementation of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP).

This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for Penangites by improving public transport coverage, services, and neighborhood connections, serving as a catalyst for the state’s economic growth.

In May of this year, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim declared that the federal government would provde allocation for the Penang LRT development at the cost RM 10 billion.

The proposed Penang LRT will connect Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas to Komtar in George Town, extending further to Tanjung Bungah.

In the subsequent phase, the project includes the development of a cross-channel link to Butterworth, with further extensions to Kepala Batas and Simpang Ampat on the mainland

The government is actively exploring funding options, including the possibility of allocating some public transport projects to the development expenditure (DE) under the Ministry of Transport.
