As the school prepares to commemorate its 175th anniversary, it reflects on a proud legacy that spans 175 years, evolving into the fourth oldest school in Malaysia.

Initially a boys-only institution, it expanded to include St Mary’s School for girls in 1968, making significant contributions to education by presenting candidates for the Cambridge Higher School Certificate Examination.

Perched atop McDougall Hill, the Anglican mission school, became an aided school in 1956 and later integrated into the National System of Education.

The Anglican Diocese now oversees a network of 48 primary and five secondary schools in Sarawak, along with three primary and three secondary schools in Brunei.

Founded by missionary Bishop Francis Thomas McDougall, who arrived in Kuching on June 29, 1848, at the age of 31. Initially, a day school for boys was opened in an empty residence.

With the support of Rajah James Brooke, land was donated for new premises in the east of the town, and the school relocated in 1849.

The school’s iconic main building, inaugurated by Rajah James Brooke on August 13, 1886, remains a Kuching landmark despite enduring challenges, including damage during the Japanese Occupation.

St Thomas’ School’s resilience highlights its commitment to quality education. The “twin towers” of its main building continue to inspire awe, overlooking St Thomas’ Cathedral and the Padang Merdeka.
