The stage is set for a thrilling journey into the past as TUTAS Conservatory of Performing Arts presents “Mariam”.

This riveting new thriller is set to premiere from 14 to 17 December 2023 at Pentas 2, klpac.

The plot revolves around Daniel, a young man who, against his father’s wishes, embarks on a quest to investigate a mysterious disappearance that occurred 20 years ago in his father’s kampung.

The Plot: A haunting encounter

Daniel’s journey takes him to Kampung Bayang, where he is welcomed by his Uncle Dai and Mak Lei.

Despite warnings and superstitions, Daniel ventures into an abandoned house believed to be haunted.

It is here that he has a haunting encounters and uncovers a dark tragedy that forces him to confront his own family to protect someone he loves.

Uncle Dai tries to convince him not to look into the case but to help the villagers with the  upcoming harvest festival. Daniel remains adamant.

Unperturbed by superstitions and  taboos, he secretly heads to the abandoned house that is said to be haunted.

There, he  meets Mariam. Slowly, he learns about the dark tragedy surrounding this case and fights his own family to protect someone he loves.

The play is the brainchild of Yuwanda Agatha, who serves as the writer and director, with Amirul Harith and Derek Tan Tjin Liang contributing as Assistant Directors and Script Contributors.

“Mariam” is a product of TUTAS’ acclaimed Bachelor of Performing Arts conservatory degree programme, under the guidance of Dato’ Dr. Faridah Merican and Joe Hasham OAM.

“Mariam” boasts a diverse cast including Jane Tee Le Qian, Samuel Wong Judd Whye, Adhika Tan, and many more. The play is performed in English with some Bahasa Malaysia.

The production team, comprising Scenographers Lim Yi Lin and Fatin Nur Alya, Set and Lighting Designers Mitchell Liong and Lew Calista Vann Kay, and others, work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring this thrilling narrative to life.

This show is supported by The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac),  The Actors Studio and Taylor’s University. 

In the span of just four years, TUTAS has attracted 80 students from Malaysia as well as  all from around the globe including Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Iran and China. This  semester, the programme is also hosting several exchange students from the  Netherlands, Germany and Spain.  

TUTAS is set to spread its wings further with the introduction of two new specialisations  in 2024.
