Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has announced changes to its GoKL bus services, revealing plans to introduce fees for foreigners using the bus service.
Malaysians can continue enjoying the service for free by registering their MyKad with a Touch ‘n Go system.
Children aged 12 and below also ride for free. The implementation of charges for foreign users will be phased in, with payment options including Touch n’ Go card, QR code, credit card, or debit card.
Registration to maintain free access
DBKL clarified that Malaysians who wish to maintain free access to the GoKL bus service must register their MyKad with a Touch ‘n Go system.
Registration can be done at specific bus stops, including KLCC, Titiwangsa (Pekeliling), and Pasar Seni, during designated hours. Additionally, a registration facility will be available at the lobby of Menara DBKL 1 on Wednesdays.
As for those holding red-coloured identity cards indicating permanent resident status, DBKL stated they could continue enjoying free rides by registering their updated identity cards featuring the Touch ‘n Go function.
However, specific details on when the charges for foreign users would commence and the corresponding fees were not disclosed.
GoKL bus service for free until further notice
In response to the changes, DBKL’s Kuala Lumpur Command & Control Centre (KLCCC) released a list of frequently-asked-questions (FAQ) to address concerns and provide clarity on the new policy.
The FAQ affirmed that non-Malaysians are currently allowed to use the GoKL bus service for free until further notice, despite the commencement of MyKad registration.
DBKL emphasised that the rates for charges on non-citizens would be announced by the Prime Minister in the near future.
The clarification aimed to dispel misinformation suggesting that non-Malaysians were prohibited from utilising the GoKL bus service, emphasising the continued accessibility for all passengers, including non-citizens, during the interim period.
As DBKL introduces changes to the GoKL bus service, including fees for foreign users, Malaysians are urged to register their MyKad with a Touch ‘n Go system to maintain free access.
The implementation of charges for non-citizens will be communicated by the Prime Minister.
DBKL’s commitment to dispelling misinformation assures continued free access for all passengers, irrespective of citizenship, until further notice.
