Melaka Floating Market to debut in February 2024

In a bid to enrich its tourism offerings, Melaka is gearing up to introduce a floating market, bringing together over 50 food and local product vendors.

Scheduled to commence operations in February 2024, the floating market aims to provide a unique experience for both locals and tourists, Melaka Hari Ini reported.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Melaka River and Coastal Development Corporation (PPSPM), Datuk TPr. Murad Husin, unveiled the details of this upcoming attraction.

A floating melting pot of culinary delights

The market’s focal point will extend from Dataran Pengkalan Rama to Sungai Melaka Phase 2, creating a vibrant and dynamic setting for diverse cultural and culinary experiences.

Murad highlighted the diversity of offerings, stating, “50 vendors will operate in boats, while 200 onshore kiosks will provide a variety of traditional Melaka products and foods. This market is very attractive and eagerly awaited by tourists and the people of Melaka.”

Preparations for the market are in full swing, with various parties collaborating to ensure a seamless experience. Murad encouraged potential vendors to get in touch with the PPSPM office, expressing enthusiasm about the market’s positive impact on local tourism.

“After this, tourists or the people of Melaka do not need to go far to experience the atmosphere of buying food on a boat because here we also have a large floating market,” he affirmed.

Pioneer project to boost tourism

This initiative is part of a broader plan by the Melaka River & Beach Development Corporation (PPSPM) to enhance the region’s tourism landscape.

State Tourism, Heritage, Arts, and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman shared insights into the project, stating, “PPSPM plans to offer 30 boats for the floating market, 60 business kiosks at the river banks, and a floating restaurant as a new tourist attraction in the state.”

He revealed that the market would feature modern roofed boats, creating an appealing visual along 120 feet of Phase Two of Sungai Melaka. After undergoing cleaning and beautification work, these boats will be strategically placed and later relocated to the water taxi station near Taman Lagenda.

As Melaka prepares to welcome visitors to its floating market, the anticipation among locals and tourists alike continues to grow.
