The Melaka state government aims to address concerns raised by traders affected by the newly implemented three-day vehicle-free zone around Banda Hilir.
This initiative, planned for weekly implementation beginning every Friday, is part of ongoing efforts to enhance tourism in Melaka.
Ensuring smooth vehicle movement
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh clarified the government’s intentions, stating, “We have never intended to penalise traders around Banda Hilir who are affected by the road closures.”
The closures are currently in a trial period, and a detailed study is underway, focusing on various aspects, particularly the traffic dispersal to ensure smooth vehicle movement in and out of the area.
“We are still waiting for feedback from all parties to ensure this initiative will improve the tourism sector in Melaka and bring good returns to the people,” explained Ab Rauf.
He emphasised that the government’s primary goal is not to hinder traders but to attract more tourists to Melaka, aligning with Visit Melaka Year 2024. The comfort of both tourists and locals remains a top priority.
Melaka govt to boost tourism in Banda Hilir
During a press conference after the close of the 2023 Pantai Puteri Megasurf event, the Chief Minister mentioned that the government is actively working on identifying the best methods to bring tourists into Banda Hilir and boost businesses in the tourist hotspot.
He urged everyone to be patient and understand the ongoing trial of the vehicle-free zone.
“Traders are the state government’s tourism partners, and Melaka will surely be greater next year with these current improvements,” reassured Ab Rauf.
The recent extension of the vehicle-free zone duration to three days, from 6 pm Friday to midnight Sunday, had sparked negative reactions from the public. Many urged the government to revert to the previous two-day period, from 6 pm Saturday to midnight Sunday.
In conclusion, the Chief Minister sought to alleviate concerns by reinforcing the state government’s commitment to collaboration with traders and tourism partners.
He highlighted that the ongoing adjustments are part of a larger effort to enhance Melaka’s appeal to tourists, aligning with the goals of Visit Melaka Year 2024. The government encourages public feedback to refine the vehicle-free zone implementation for the benefit of both the local community and visitors.
