In a dramatic turn of events during the LEKAS Night Ride 2023, an off-duty anaesthesiologist, Dr. Shahridan Bin Mohd Fathil, showcased quick thinking and medical expertise in an extraordinary lifesaving effort.

The incident unfolded on the 21st of October, 2023, during the popular cycling event along the Lekas Highway, where Dr. Shahridan’s intervention proved critical amid 6,000 participants.

Amidst the bustling event, a fellow cyclist collapsed, receiving lifesaving CPR from a first responder. Initially hesitant to intervene, given the presence of assistance, Dr. Shahridan’s decision to join the lifesaving effort became a turning point.

Recognizing a cardiac arrest, he swiftly collaborated with Dr. Farihan, another physician-cyclist, to continue the CPR efforts while awaiting the arrival of emergency responders.

“In such situations, every second counts. It was apparent that immediate action was necessary, and I am grateful we could contribute to saving a life,” stated Dr. Shahridan.

A pivotal lifesaving decision

With the arrival of the ambulance, equipped with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), the patient experienced a crucial return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) after the initial shock.

Dr. Shahridan and Dr. Farihan then faced a pivotal decision – to accompany the patient in the ambulance. This choice became instrumental when the patient lost ROSC en route to Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar Seremban.

“Accompanying the patient was an instinctive decision. We knew that continuing CPR in the ambulance was vital, and it turned out to be crucial during the journey,” explained Dr. Farihan.

Upon reaching the hospital, the patient was transferred to Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM for an emergency primary coronary intervention (PCI) and subsequent ICU admission.

Despite some memory impairment, the patient has made significant strides in recovery and is presently undergoing rehabilitation at the Ministry Of Health Rehab hospital in Cheras.

Reflecting on the incident, Dr. Shahridan emphasized the importance of CPR knowledge and the presence of AEDs in public spaces.

“This incident underscores the significance of basic life support skills and the accessibility of AEDs. It’s a reminder for everyone to consider undergoing CPR training – you never know when you might need it,” he urged.

Dr. Shahridan also highlighted the importance of “The Chain of Survival” in cardiac arrest situations such as this. This chain is as follows:

  1. Recognition and Activation of Emergency Response:
Immediate contact with emergency services upon identifying cardiac arrest.
  2. Early CPR:
Prompt CPR by trained individuals to maintain blood flow to the brain and vital organs.
  3. Rapid Defibrillation:
Use of AEDs to restore normal heart rhythm, enhancing survival chances.
  4. Advanced Life Support:
Medical interventions by professionals to stabilise heart function.
  5. Post Arrest Care:
Monitoring and supporting the patient’s recovery post-cardiac arrest.

Dr. Shahridan’s actions exemplify the critical role of medical knowledge and the presence of mind in emergency situations. His story is a testament to the life-saving power of swift and informed intervention.
