In response to recent confusion, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has issued a clarification regarding the availability of free parking in car parks under its management after office hours.

Contrary to misconceptions, not all car parks are exempt from charges during non-office hours.

DBKL clarified that there are 11 licensed car jockey parking facilities in Kuala Lumpur. The statement aimed to address a viral complaint on social media about parking issues in Bukit Bintang.

Investigations revealed that the concern pertains to an open car park near a lane off Jalan Sultan Ismail.

“This car park is under the control of Kuala Lumpur City Hall, and fees are applicable during office hours until 5 pm.

In addition, DBKL has contracted a private company to manage eight parking spaces as valet services after office hours,” stated the release.

DBKL emphasised that the valet service operator has been instructed to display informational signs promptly at their designated locations.

These signs are intended to inform the public about the valet services available during non-office hours.

Addressing a video shared on social media showing alleged scratches on a car door caused by a parking tout, DBKL acknowledged the incident and is taking the matter seriously.

The enforcement team is actively addressing the issue of unauthorised parking jockeys in the federal capital.

From the previous year to the current date, a total of 75 unauthorised jockeys have been prosecuted under Section 50(3) and Section 119(2) of the Road Traffic Act 1987.

The enforcement team is set to intensify surveillance in concentrated areas known for parking tout activities, including Bukit Bintang, Jalan Beremi, and Jalan Walter Grenier.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall encourages the public to utilise public transport to reduce private vehicle use, particularly in the city centre.

This initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion and support DBKL’s efforts in reducing carbon emissions.

The city administration is committed to ensuring fair and transparent parking services for residents and visitors alike.

The ongoing enforcement measures and encouragement of sustainable transportation options align with Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s broader goals for urban development.
