The Melaka government is gearing up to patent the esteemed Lohan Guava, locally known as ‘Jambu Melaka’, to position it as the quintessential fruit representing the region’s agricultural prowess.

Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh, chairman of the State Rural Development, Agriculture, and Food Security Committee, highlighted the guava’s distinctive qualities, making it an ideal candidate to elevate Melaka’s fruit products.

Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh explained that the decision to choose Lohan Guava as Melaka’s iconic fruit was rooted in its increasing popularity among both local and external fruit enthusiasts.

Not only does the guava boast substantial size, but its crispness, sweetness, and high water content contribute to its appeal.

This move aligns with the strategic vision to showcase Melaka’s unique agricultural offerings during the Visit Melaka Year 2024 (TMM2024) campaign.

Specific growth and cultivation

The Jambu Melaka slated for patenting is exclusively grown and cultivated on Gadong Island.

Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh highlighted that the distinct taste of this guava might be attributed to the specific soil conditions on the island.

Currently, only a handful of dedicated growers on Pulau Gadong cultivate the Lohan Guava, contributing to its exclusivity and unique flavour profile.

The official launch of Jambu Melaka as the state’s iconic fruit is anticipated in June, coinciding with the ‘agriculture month’ for TMM2024.

Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh revealed, “In conjunction with the month of June being chosen as the agriculture month, we will hold various programmes, including an ‘agrofest’ and more specifically, the largest durian festival in South-east Asia.”

This initiative not only recognises the agricultural significance of Melaka but also aims to attract tourists through the celebration of local produce.
