Canon Marketing Malaysia, in collaboration with the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) and Shorebirds Peninsular Malaysia Project (SPMP), marked World Wetlands Day by organising bird conservation activities at Sungai Tembus, Penang.
A significant highlight was the launch of a dedicated microsite for shorebirds in Malaysia, sponsored by Canon and developed by SPMP.
The platform provides detailed information on over 70 shorebird species and their habitats, reinforcing the vital link between these avian species and wetlands.
Unveiling knowledge on Malaysian Shorebirds
The focal point of the event was the inauguration of a microsite dedicated to shorebirds in Malaysia.
Created by SPMP and sponsored by Canon, the platform serves as a valuable resource for bird enthusiasts, offering insights into over 70 shorebird species and their habitats across Malaysia.
Notably, the microsite includes a special section featuring experiences from birders using Canon cameras, coupled with photography tips and tricks.
Dato’ Seri Sundarajoo Somu, Penang EXCO for Housing and Environment, highlighted the significance of choosing Sungai Tembus for these activities.
He stated, “Penaga Wetlands is not only a haven for biodiversity but offers a unique opportunity for visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of our environmental ecosystems.”
The event aligns with MBSP’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reflecting its strides in promoting environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
Birding tour with Canon cameras in Sungai Tembus
The event featured various engaging activities, including a birding tour by boat at Sungai Tembus, where guests utilised Canon cameras for bird watching.
Educational talks on shorebirds, bird photography, and a demonstration on bird ringing provided participants with a holistic understanding of the importance of avian conservation.
The initiative aimed to create awareness about the intricate connection between shorebirds and the wetlands they inhabit.
Daren Tan, Head of Penang Branch at Canon Marketing Malaysia, expressed the company’s commitment to the cause: “Guided by Canon’s corporate philosophy of ‘Kyosei,’ we are delighted to collaborate with our partners and play a part in emphasizing the significance of these ecosystems to ensure their sustainability.”
Canon’s involvement in the bird conservation activities at Sungai Tembus aligns with its broader mission encapsulated by “Imaging for Good.”
The company actively engages in initiatives supporting education, community care, environmental conservation, and cultural enhancement.
This event seamlessly extends Canon’s ongoing conservation efforts in Sungai Tembus, a designated Key Biodiversity Area, demonstrating its commitment to creating a brighter and more sustainable society.
In 2023, Canon planted 200 mangrove trees in Sungai Tembus, contributing to ecological preservation and raising awareness about the critical importance of conservation.
