Shah Alam Stadium demolition begins for new sports hub

Demolition of the iconic Shah Alam Stadium begins in June, paving the way for a state-of-the-art multipurpose sports complex.

With an estimated cost of RM787 million, the new Shah Alam Sports Complex promises to be a state-of-the-art facility covering 76.08 hectares.

The Shah Alam Stadium, an iconic landmark, is slated for full demolition by mid-2025 to pave the way for the development of a multipurpose mega sports complex.

The official commencement of this ambitious project was announced Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, marking the beginning of a new era for sports infrastructure in Selangor.

Bidding farewell: Pre-demolition phase underway

The iconic Shah Alam stadium set to be completely demolished by end of 2025 making way for new sports complex.

Amirudin said in a statement today that he has emphasised to the parties involved in construction that the development of the Shah Alam Stadium must meet all the standards set by the government and local authorities (PBT).

“(The development of the project) is also a model that uses the best methods (best practices) in infrastructure development, especially on such a scale.

The redevelopment project, spearheaded by Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI), has entered its pre-demolition phase, slated to be completed within three months.

This phase involves preparatory measures such as the installation of hoardings, laying the groundwork for the forthcoming demolition works on the stadium building, expected to commence in June.

Lembaran Prospek Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of MRCB Land Sdn Bhd, has been appointed to carry out the demolition works at Shah Alam Stadium.

A multifaceted sports & entertainment hub in Shah Alam

The development of Shah Alam Sports complex will include closed theatre, youth and sports facilities, as well as a recreational park.

Amirudin emphasised the collaboration between MBI and Malaysia Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) to implement a robust mitigation plan, addressing potential impacts on stakeholders during the demolition period.

He also highlighted adherence to safety guidelines, with a commitment to utilise the “dismantling and hacking” method over controlled explosion, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

The ambitious redevelopment plan, scheduled for completion by 2026, encompasses multiple phases.

At the signing ceremony, MBI special projects general manager Datuk Ruslan Abdul Aziz said the new stadium is scheduled to be completed on time in 2026. 

The development of Shah Alam Sports complex will include closed theatre, youth and sports facilities, as well as a recreational park.

“The second phase of the project is expected to commence in 2027 and complete in 2028, while the third phase will take place from 2028 to 2029,” he said.

The second phase will include the construction of a closed theatre, youth and sports facilities, as well as a recreational park.

The third phase, meanwhile, will involve the construction of an integrated transport hub and a hotel, he said.
