The Shah Alam Sports Complex (KSSA) development project will move forward following proper procedures to avoid controversies or disputes, according to Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

The project has garnered support from football fans, the Sultan of Selangor, and the Raja Muda of Selangor, reflecting the wishes of the community. Amirudin emphasized the importance of executing the project in line with the trust placed in it.

Amirudin told Bernama that the construction schedule will not be influenced by the state election, and the project will continue as planned.

The redevelopment aims to address issues such as flash floods, and traffic congestion, and provide more recreational spaces. The new stadium will be designed with a movable pitch and have the potential to become an international tournament venue.

Demolition of Shah Alam Stadium and plans for the new stadium

The Shah Alam Stadium and Malawati Indoor Stadium will be demolished to make way for a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility, which will be known as The Shah Alam Sports complex.

The date for the demolition and subsequent construction of the over 200-acre complex has yet to be announced. Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) will lead the redevelopment project, aiming to address issues such as flash floods and traffic congestion.

The new stadium will feature a moveable pitch, allowing for better flood management, increased green recreational areas, and improved spectator experience. While the proposed plans do not include an athletics track, there are open spaces within the complex that could accommodate one in the future.

The multi-use stadium will prioritize football and strive to obtain FIFA certification as an international tournament venue. The final specifications will be determined through discussions with the Selangor government.

Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB), known for its involvement in the restoration of the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, has been selected to oversee the redevelopment.

Land swap agreement to finance the construction

To finance the estimated RM787 million cost of the Shah Alam sports complex, the Selangor government has opted for a public-private partnership with Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB).

The construction will be financed through a land swap agreement, with the Selangor government having identified ten sites in Hulu Selangor and Port Klang for the land swap. The land swap will occur gradually, depending on the progress of the construction.

Upon reaching specific milestones, the government will surrender the designated land to the developer. This approach ensures that the land swap aligns with the project’s timeline and progress.

Although the construction is slightly behind the original schedule, the aim is to commence the project this year, prioritizing the proper process over election-related concerns.

Remembering the legacy of Shah Alam stadium

Shah Alam Sports Complex

The soon-to-be-demolished Shah Alam Stadium, a multi-purpose stadium in Shah Alam, Selangor, holds significant memories for football enthusiasts.

Construction of the Shah Alam Stadium, inspired by Croatia’s Hajduk Split stadium, Poljud, commenced on January 1, 1990. Officially opened on July 16, 1994, the stadium became the home of the Red Giants (Selangor) and has a capacity of 80,372.

The stadium has hosted notable teams such as Bayern Munich, Leeds United, and Flamengo, contributing to its rich history.

As renovations are underway, FA of Selangor President Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah expressed his anticipation for the new stadium. The redevelopment aims to enhance the fan experience by providing additional facilities beyond the 90-minute game, such as museums, galleries, and recreational spaces.

The reconstruction process has been given careful consideration to ensure its success and meet the evolving needs of the community, he added.

As the Shah Alam Sports Complex development project progresses, it is expected to transform the sporting landscape in Selangor, offering an advanced facility for football enthusiasts and providing a platform for memorable experiences.
