Langkawi welcomes first charter flight from Chengdu

Organised by the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), this marks the beginning of an ongoing charter series aimed at promoting Langkawi.

Langkawi received a boost in tourism as it welcomed 178 tourists from Chengdu on the year’s inaugural charter flight from China.

Organised by the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA), this marks the beginning of an ongoing charter series aimed at promoting Langkawi as a preferred tourist destination.

The charter flight initiative entails eight scheduled flights from Chengdu, with an estimated total of 1,480 visitors expected to arrive in Langkawi, as reported by LADA this week.

Batik Air Malaysia OD611 operated the first flight of the charter series, departing from Chengdu at 0347 on 5 February and landing in Langkawi at 0738, with a flight duration of three hours and 49 minutes.

Increased tourism opportunities for Langkawi

In 2023, Langkawi saw a surge in charter flights, with 10 special charters facilitated by LADA’s enticing incentive packages.

Additionally, LADA offers supplementary incentives to airlines introducing direct and scheduled flights from new origins to Langkawi, provided they commit to maintaining flight schedules for at least one year.

LADA’s chief executive officer, Dato’ Haslina Abdul Hamid, expressed enthusiasm about the prospects of the charter series.

“We are thrilled to kickstart the year with the arrival of the first charter flight from Chengdu. This initiative underscores Langkawi’s appeal as a preferred destination for international travellers,” added Haslina.

Ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity

Efforts to enhance air connectivity to Langkawi are ongoing, with LADA currently in discussions with a leading travel agency in Poland.

The negotiations aim to establish at least 30 direct flights to Langkawi from Poland annually, spanning from October to March, coinciding with the peak tourist season. LADA is optimistic about securing this charter series deal, citing the attractiveness of Langkawi’s incentives package.

Mohd Amin Yahya, senior director of domestic and events at Tourism Malaysia, echoed LADA’s sentiments, emphasising the importance of improving tourism infrastructure and services.

“As we continue to enhance our offerings and hospitality standards, Langkawi is well-positioned to accommodate visitors through an increased number of direct flights,” remarked Yahya.

The arrival of the year’s first charter flight signifies a promising start for Langkawi’s tourism industry. The collaborative efforts between LADA, Batik Air Malaysia, and other stakeholders have set a positive tone for the year ahead.

With ongoing initiatives to enhance connectivity and attract visitors from new markets, Langkawi remains poised for continued tourism growth.

The celebratory event at Langkawi Airport, attended by representatives from various sectors, further highlighted the island’s cultural vibrancy and hospitality.

As Langkawi prepares to usher in the Chinese New Year festivities, the tourism industry anticipates a bustling season ahead, bolstered by increased charter flights and international visitors.
