The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has pledged RM500,000 for the enhancement of the renowned Gerbang Malam market located on Jalan Dato Tahwil Azar in Ipoh.
Nga Kor Ming, the Minister of KPKT, made the announcement during the launch of the 2024 Chinese New Year Musical Concert at Taman D.R. Seenivasagam’s Amphitheatre.
Nga pledges RM500k for Gerbang Malam
Nga unveiled plans for phase two of upgrading works at the Gerbang Malam market, a popular tourist attraction in Ipoh.
Expressing his commitment to enhancing the market’s facilities ahead of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Minister Nga allocated RM500,000 for the project.
He stated, “Tonight, I want to announce giving an ‘ang pow’ to the Ipoh City Council (MBI) with an allocation of RM500,000 to carry out upgrading work on the Gerbang Malam market.”
The bustling Gerbang Malam, also known as the Night Gate Market springs to life each evening, resonating with the lively transactions between vendors and customers.
Taman D.R Seenivasagam gets a facelift
Nga disclosed that the ministry would allocate RM500,000 for the project, complemented by an additional RM250,000 from the Ipoh City Council (MBI).
This combined funding aims to facilitate landscaping, lighting enhancements, and overall improvements to the surroundings of Taman D.R Seenivasagam.
By investing in infrastructure and beautification efforts, the authorities seek to create an inviting and aesthetically pleasing environment for residents and visitors alike.

The Chinese New Year Musical Concert, held at Taman D.R. Seenivasagam’s Amphitheatre, marked a significant cultural event for Ipoh.
Attended by approximately 3,000 spectators, the concert showcased various performances, including those by the Kinta Valley Wind Orchestra (KVWO), traditional songs, dragon and lion dances, and a fireworks display.
This event reflects ongoing efforts to promote Ipoh’s cultural richness and heritage, particularly after the city’s recognition by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) as a City of Music.
