Jonker Walk: 15K visitors expected for CNY Open House

Anticipation mounts as the Melaka State Government gears up to host the Chinese New Year Open House 2024 at the iconic Jonker Walk on February 22nd, with an estimated attendance of 15,000 people.

State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Ngwe Hee Sem said a total of RM150,000 in the form of food, drinks, and souvenir vouchers will be allocated to the first 10,000 visitors at the open house to be held from 7pm to midnight.

Ngwe revealed that preparations for the event are in full swing, with the first 10,000 guests set to receive vouchers worth RM15 each.

He affirmed, “The response is quite overwhelming compared to previous years since Jonker Walk has been chosen as the venue.”

Ngwe further elaborated on the significance of the vouchers, stating, “These vouchers are provided to enable them to shop for food, drinks, or souvenirs sold at Jonker Walk.”

The allocation of vouchers, approved by the state government, aims to enhance the visitors’ experience while supporting local traders.

A sum of RM150,000 has been earmarked by the State Government for the distribution of vouchers, demonstrating their commitment to bolstering the local economy and aiding traders around Jonker Walk.

Ngwe also emphasised that this year’s celebration would forego the traditional banquet, with attendees instead receiving vouchers to purchase refreshments and delicacies available in the vicinity.

He highlighted the importance of empowering visitors to make their own choices, stating, “This way, we can help the traders at Jonker Walk generate income while allowing visitors to make their own choices throughout the event.”

The Chinese New Year Open House anticipates the presence of esteemed guests, including the Governor of Melaka, Tun Seri Setia Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, and the Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Yusoh.

Additionally, the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, is expected to grace the celebration, underscoring the significance of Jonker Walk as a cultural and tourist hotspot in Melaka.

As preparations continue, organisers are poised to deliver a memorable and festive experience for all attendees at Jonker Walk’s Chinese New Year Open House 2024.
