This unique initiative transcended medical care, offering a platform for connection, inspiration, and the building of a vital peer support network.

Recognizing the significant unmet need for peer support among breast cancer patients, particularly those diagnosed at advanced stages, the event provided a nurturing space for survivors to connect.

Engaging activities like wellness talks, survivor-sharing sessions, and mindfulness exercises fostered a sense of community and understanding.

To raise awareness, advocates and healthcare professionals also spoke about breast cancer in general, treatment options, and the importance of early detection.

Patients were also advised to seek assistance via patient support programs or advocacy groups.

A powerful testament to this was Ta Huey Mein’s story. Diagnosed at 48, she emphasised the importance of seeking accurate information and staying positive.

Throughout her journey, Mein leaned on the support of family and medical professionals for strength and guidance.

“Connecting with other survivors allows them to empathize, support each other, and draw strength from their shared experiences,” shared Dr. Tho Lye Mun, Head of Oncology at Beacon Hospital.

This sentiment resonated with Dr. Murallitharan Munisamy, Managing Director of NCSM, who encouraged survivors to prioritise not just physical health, but also their emotional and financial well-being, highlighting that “quality of life is not a luxury, but a necessity.”

Mohamed Elwakil, Country President for Novartis Malaysia, emphasized the event’s significance in going beyond access to medicine.

“Initiatives like ‘Gift of Time’ underscore the importance of fostering peer support and building a strong community for long-term patient well-being and survival,” he concluded.

This event stands as a beacon of hope, offering survivors not just additional days, but a life enriched by connection, understanding, and the strength found in shared journeys.
