Dengue cases spike: Sunway Medical Centre urges vigilance

Malaysia faces a rising threat as dengue cases surge across the nation. Sunway Medical Centre urges the public to be vigilant and seek immediate medical attention if they experience warning signs.

Early detection and treatment are crucial, warns Dr. Aaron Lai Kuo Huo, emergency physician at the center, to prevent severe complications.

Recognizing dengue’s red flags

Dr. Aaron Lai Kuo Huo,

While fever, headache, body aches, and rashes are common dengue symptoms, Dr. Lai emphasizes the importance of recognizing warning signs that require immediate medical attention:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Persistent vomiting (more than three times a day)
  • Persistent diarrhea (more than three times a day)
  • Drowsiness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Spontaneous bleeding from gums or nose
  • Black stool

“Don’t delay,” advises Dr. Lai. “Seek help at the nearest emergency department or general practitioner clinic depending on the severity and accessibility.”

Differentiating dengue and protecting yourself

While fever raises suspicion, Dr. Lai cautions against relying solely on it for diagnosis. “Dengue often presents with more severe muscle and joint pain and can progress to serious complications like dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome (DSS).”

DHF and DSS are characterized by:

  • Internal bleeding
  • Low platelet count
  • Plasma leakage
  • Organ impairment

To prevent these complications:

  • Use mosquito repellent containing DEET.
  • Install mosquito nets or screens when sleeping.
  • Eliminate stagnant water sources, breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
  • Wear long-sleeved clothing.

Early diagnosis and proper management are crucial. Avoid over-the-counter medications like aspirin, as they can worsen bleeding.
