APU lecturer Eekang Ooi earns top design certification 

Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) celebrates Ooi Aik Khong (Eekang) on becoming one of the first 50 Certified Industrial Designers (CIDe) in Malaysia.

The CIDe certification, awarded by the Malaysia Design Council (MRM), recognizes exceptional talent and dedication in the field of industrial design.

Established under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), MRM aims to propel Malaysia’s design industry towards international competitiveness.

Accomplished journey of Eekang

Ooi received the CIDe title at a ceremony on February 28th, 2024.

Reflecting on this achievement, he stated, “Earning the CIDe certification signifies not only design expertise but also the ability to bridge creativity and functionality.”

To qualify for CIDe, applicants require a relevant degree and substantial experience (minimum 5 years for Bachelor’s or 10 years for Diploma holders).

A strong portfolio showcasing local and international experience is also mandatory.

Eekang’s journey began with a Bachelor’s degree from RMIT University, followed by a Master’s and extensive professional experience across 14 countries.

He has worked with multinational corporations like Bosch and Motorola, solidifying his global design expertise.

From global expertise to sustainable design education

Currently pursuing a PhD in Management at APU with a focus on sustainable design, Eekang leverages the university’s Sustainable Materials Lab to develop biomaterials from agricultural waste.

This allows him to empower students to experiment and become pioneers in sustainable design.

Eekang emphasizes the importance of learning from the international design community, staying updated on trends, and gaining real-world experience.

His guidance serves as a valuable roadmap for aspiring designers seeking CIDe certification.

With Eekang at the helm, APU’s School of Media, Arts and Design (SoMAD) offers students the opportunity to learn from a distinguished leader.

Exposure to cutting-edge design principles, practical industry experiences, and potential CIDe certification empowers students for successful careers in industrial design.
