Malaysian road users in private vehicles will enjoy toll-free travel on highways during the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

The Works Ministry announced the initiative in a statement on March 28th, 2024.

The toll exemption applies to Class 1 vehicles (private vehicles) and will be in effect from 12.01am on April 8th to 11.59pm on April 9th.

Toll booths nationwide will waive fees during this period, with the exception of Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Tanjung Kupang toll plazas in Johor.

“Safety remains paramount,” emphasised Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Works Minister.

“While infrastructure and regulations are in place, motorist caution is crucial. We cannot rely solely on concessionaire companies to ensure our safety.”

To manage potential congestion during the holiday period, the Malaysian Highway Authority and concession companies will activate Smart Lanes at 18 strategic locations along the PLUS Highway.

This initiative expands upon the 15 Smart Lane locations utilized during the recent Chinese New Year celebrations.

Clear signage and mobile variable message signs will inform motorists about Smart Lane activation and deactivation times.

He also reminded motorcyclists to exercise caution when using emergency lanes, as these lanes may be converted to Smart Lanes during peak hours.

To further facilitate smooth traffic flow, lane closures for maintenance will be suspended from April 1st to 17th.

However, essential maintenance work that does not require lane closures may proceed. PLUS will also deploy emergency response teams at 11 locations to address any unforeseen issues.

The Ministry of Works’ initiative to waive tolls during Hari Raya Aidilfitri offers a welcome financial relief for Malaysians traveling home for the holidays.

By implementing Smart Lanes and suspending maintenance activities, the authorities aim to minimise congestion and ensure a smooth journey for all road users.

The two-day toll waiver is estimated to cost the government MYR37.6 million.

Nanta anticipates a significant increase in traffic volume, with an estimated 2.46 million additional vehicles on the highway network each day.
