Padiberas Nasional Berhad (BERNAS), a leading Malaysian rice producer, has announced a new initiative to boost domestic glutinous rice production and improve farmer livelihoods.
The Projek Padi Pulut Langkawi BERNAS ala Sekinchan, launched by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Haji Mohamad Sabu, introduces the Smart SBB (Large-Scale Smart Padi Field) program to Langkawi.
Elevating farmers and rice production
This project aims to empower 326 farmers by providing them with the tools and knowledge to increase their income and contribute to national food security.
Encompassing 540 hectares of land and developed in phases over five years (2024-2028), the first phase has already begun, cultivating glutinous rice on over 14 hectares.
Following the successful implementation of Smart SBB in Sekinchan, BERNAS brings this technology-driven approach to Langkawi.
The program emphasizes integrated farm management systems, mechanization, and Internet of Things (IoT) integration.
These practices aim to optimize both the quality and quantity of rice yield, leading to higher returns for farmers.
Collaboration for food security
BERNAS is committed to supporting farmers and ensuring Malaysia’s food security.
Mohamad Sabu stated, “The project facilitates farmers’ participation by providing initial financial support for paddy seed capital.”
BERNAS further emphasises its dedication by collaborating with various government agencies like the Department of Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS) to achieve this goal.
By empowering farmers with innovative technology and financial assistance, the Projek Padi Pulut Langkawi BERNAS ala Sekinchan is a significant step towards a more secure and stable domestic rice supply for all Malaysians.
BERNAS’ commitment to collaboration with stakeholders ensures that the project benefits both farmers and consumers.
