The Sejahtera Malaysia Forum, a pivotal event aimed at promoting unity and social harmony, took place on April 29, 2024, at Le Quadri Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. Co-organised by KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific, UCSI University, and Dialog Rakyat, the forum brought together distinguished speakers and thought leaders to delve into strategies for fostering unity amongst Malaysians.
One of the highlights of the event was the keynote address delivered by the Minister of National Unity Malaysia, Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang. Speaking passionately about the importance of unity, Minister Aaron emphasized the significance of embedding the principles of Rukun Negara, Malaysia’s national philosophy, in the hearts of every Malaysian.
“The principles of Rukun Negara must be embedded in the soul of every Malaysian,” asserted Minister Aaron during his address at the Sejahtera Malaysia forum. “Respect and acceptance are core values we must instil in Malaysian society.”
Government Initiatives to Promote Unity Unveiled
Minister Aaron further outlined government initiatives aimed at promoting unity, including the appointment of 50 unity ambassadors and two unity icons this year, along with the construction of unity complexes in each state across Malaysia. “We hope to complete the unity complexes by 2027,” he added.
The forum also featured a distinguished panel of speakers, including Dr. Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen, MP of Kuching, Faye Lim, Founder of The Rojak Projek, and Tan Sri Michael Yeoh, President of the KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific. Each speaker offered valuable insights into the various facets of unity and social cohesion in Malaysia.
Dr. Lee J. Peter, Assistant Professor at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia, who attended the forum, shared his thoughts on the significance of the event and proposed additional measures to foster unity through historical education.
“This forum serves as a beacon for exploring Malaysian identity and laying the foundations for nation-building,” remarked Dr. Lee. “It offers a crucial platform for dialogue that celebrates our diversity while working towards a more unified and prosperous future for all Malaysians.”
Appreciation of History: A Pathway to National Unity
Dr. Lee highlighted the pivotal role of history education in promoting unity and national cohesion, proposing initiatives such as incorporating history role play into primary education and enriching the history syllabus to include a chapter on Rukun Negara.
“By delving into the intricate contributions of each ethnic group to the nation’s development, students can foster a deeper appreciation for the diversity that defines Malaysia,” explained Dr. Lee. “Moreover, history serves as a bridge between disparate communities, nurturing empathy, understanding, and mutual respect.”
Dr. Lee emphasized the importance of learning from Malaysia’s historical experiences, including the lessons from the tumultuous events of May 13, 1969, and subsequent efforts to promote racial harmony and inclusivity.
“Awareness of history can empower Malaysians to make informed decisions, foster inclusivity, and advocate for national unity,” concluded Dr. Lee. “Let’s cherish our diversity and recognize history as our esteemed teacher on the path to unity.”
The Sejahtera Malaysia Forum concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to work together towards building a more united and harmonious Malaysia, where respect, acceptance, and understanding prevail across all communities.
