George Town Esplanade project wins big at MLAA14

The George Town Esplanade Project has emerged as a shining example of urban renewal, heritage preservation, and community enrichment, bagging three prestigious awards at the 14th Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA14).

The project, encompassing both the Esplanade Seawall and the Linear Garden, was awarded the coveted Project of the Year 2024 title.

It further impressed the jury, receiving the Special Award for Conservation and Preservation, and the Excellence Award for Landscape Design (Malaysia Project) in the Professional category.

A rigorous selection process at MLAA14

MLAA event director Charles Teo emphasised the intense competition faced by the George Town Esplanade Project.

“This year’s awards saw a record 123 submissions from across the landscape architecture industry vying for recognition in 12 categories,” he stated.

He elaborated on the rigorous selection process, highlighting Q&A sessions with the jury and on-site visits for shortlisted projects like the George Town Esplanade.

The jury commended Permata Green, the project’s design firm, for their “meticulous curation of memory, reconciliation, empowerment, celebration, and hope.”

Since its reopening in May 2022, the George Town Esplanade has become a thriving focal point.

It has not only stimulated economic activity by attracting both locals and tourists, but has also fostered a deeper appreciation for the area’s historical, civic, and environmental significance.

The successful integration of the adjacent linear open space and the Cenotaph War Memorial in 2023 further enhanced the project.

Collaboration is key for George Town Esplanade

MLAA director Charles Teo highlighted the project’s success as a testament to strong collaboration.

Key stakeholders including the Penang government, Penang Island City Council (MBPP), the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, Think City, the Penang Veteran’s Association, and local artisans from the World Heritage Site all played crucial roles.

This collaboration, according to Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, involved a public-private partnership that brought together the expertise of various entities.

Chow emphasised that the George Town Esplanade Project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The project extends the lifespan of the seafront promenade, ensuring its enjoyment for future generations.

Furthermore, it expands public access to the waterfront, creates green spaces, and utilises resilient local trees, contributing to a more sustainable urban environment.

The George Town Esplanade Project’s success at the MLAA14 serves as a testament to Penang’s vision for its heritage areas.

By blending innovative design with respect for history and a focus on community well-being, the project creates a model for urban renewal that celebrates the past while creating a vibrant space for the future.
