DE Rantau expands access for digital nomads in Malaysia

The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) has announced significant updates to the DE Rantau programme, enhancing Malaysia’s appeal as a top destination for digital nomads.

The DE Rantau Nomad Pass, originally for IT and digital professionals, now includes a broader range of professionals, such as founders, CEOs, tax accountants, legal counsels, and more.

This expansion allows a diverse group of digital freelancers and remote workers to apply.

The minimum income requirement for these non-IT/digital talents is set at USD 60,000 annually or USD 5,000 monthly. Furthermore, parents of the main applicant can now be included as dependents.

Expansion and Impact of DE Rantau

As of 31 May 2024, the DE Rantau programme has received 3,096 applications, approving 1,443 of them, including 189 renewals.

Applicants hail from 78 countries, with the top five being Russia, Pakistan, Britain, Japan, and Australia.

The average annual income of these approved digital nomads is USD 69,000, with most skilled in software development, digital marketing, and AI/machine learning.

A 2023 year-end survey indicated that 40% of approved applicants reside in Malaysia with their families, contributing significantly to local spending in tourism, education, food, accommodation, and transportation sectors.

“We are thrilled by the response and the positive impact the DE Rantau programme is having on Malaysia’s digital economy,” said an MDEC spokesperson.

“Our goal is to continue growing and supporting a vibrant digital nomad community here.”

Building a supportive network

The DE Rantau programme has established a robust network of local and international partners, including co-working space providers, insurance platforms, healthcare providers, accommodation platforms, travel and leisure providers, cashless solution providers, and transportation services.

Notable partners include WORQ, Common Ground, Komune Co-working, Universal Space Offices, Jetpack Langkawi, SafetyWing, KPJ Healthcare, MHTC, OYO, Tripcarte, AxaiPay, EdxaPay, SenangPay, EasyBook, Good Foodie Media, and HERTZ.

These partnerships aim to provide a comprehensive support system for digital nomads, enhancing their living and working experiences in Malaysia.

“We are committed to ensuring that digital nomads have access to the best facilities and services,” added the spokesperson.

“This network is essential for fostering a thriving digital nomad ecosystem.”

Looking ahead, DE Rantau plans several community initiatives to engage and enrich the digital nomad community in Malaysia.

This includes the Scale Summit @ Langkawi later this month, organised by JetPack Langkawi.

Additionally, DE Rantau @ Terengganu will be held in Q3 2024, followed by the DE Rantau Fest 2024 in Q4 2024, promising an exciting lineup of activities and engagements.

These events aim to foster community spirit among digital nomads and integrate them more closely with local communities.
