Pesta Tanglung, a beloved tradition of the Mid-Autumn Festival, lit up Juru today, as the local Chinese community came together to celebrate reunion and togetherness.
The event, organised by the Persatuan Kebajikan Aktif Pulau Pinang and the Dewan Perhimpunan Cina Pulau Pinang Parlimen Batu Kawan, saw participation from hundreds of residents and local leaders, including Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
Chow emphasised the significance of Pesta Tanglung in fostering unity among the community, stating, “Batu Kawan has a strong and active community spirit, and I am glad to see many local organisations voluntarily organising cultural and welfare activities that enhance harmony among all races.”
Celebration strengthens Batu Kawan’s community spirit
Pesta Tanglung has become one of Juru’s annual highlights, showcasing the neighbourhood’s dedication to preserving cultural heritage while fostering unity.
Chow, who attended the event at Dewan Perkampungan Serbaguna, praised the local organisations and their role in bringing the community together.
“As the MP for this constituency, I am proud of the ongoing efforts to organise events like this that attract thousands of participants and drive community cohesion,” Chow said.
He also commended the youth involved in the festival, as well as the volunteer fire brigade that actively supports the district during emergencies.
Chow pointed out that recent cultural events in Batu Kawan have been highly successful, drawing large crowds and strengthening the neighbourhood’s sense of unity.
He noted the growing importance of Batu Kawan as a hub for Penang’s future development, with new businesses settling in the area, leading to rapid economic growth.
Community safety amid weather warnings
As Penang gears up for strong winds and heavy rain, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (Met) has advised residents to stay alert.
Chow used the Pesta Tanglung platform to urge families, schools, and organisations to take precautions for safety in the coming days.
“I encourage everyone to stay vigilant and follow the guidelines to ensure the safety of our community,” Chow remarked.
The flood action centre in Seberang Perai has already been activated, with the State Natural Disaster Management Unit ready to monitor the situation.
Chow assured residents that the necessary precautions are in place to address potential risks.
Pesta Tanglung not only highlights the cultural significance of the Mid-Autumn Festival but also represents the spirit of togetherness and progress in Juru and Batu Kawan.
The event stands as a testament to the vibrant community spirit that drives Penang’s development, blending tradition with modern growth.
