Sunplay and partners raise RM40,000 for coral rehabilitation

Sunplay partners with Watsons and Reef Check Malaysia, raising RM40,000 for a coral rehabilitation project on Tioman Island

Malaysia’s leading sunscreen brand, Sunplay, proudly announced the fourth consecutive year of its impactful “Sending Love & Care to the Ocean” Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. This year, the initiative takes a major step forward with a significant partnership between Sunplay, Watsons, and Reef Check Malaysia for a coral rehabilitation project on Tioman Island, aiming to restore vital marine ecosystems through coral planting.

RM40,000 raised for coral restoration

In an effort to bolster coral conservation efforts, Sunplay pledged to donate RM1 for every purchase of its Sunplay Ultra Eco-Safe UV Lotion and other outdoor sunscreens sold at Watsons throughout September. This initiative successfully raised RM40,000, which will go towards planting coral fragments essential to sustaining the rich marine life on Tioman Island. The funds collected will support not only coral planting but also long-term monitoring and rehabilitation efforts.

“We are thrilled to elevate our ‘Sending Love & Care to the Ocean’ initiative by collaborating with Reef Check Malaysia in a project that not only rehabilitates coral reefs but also engages the local community,” said Lim Mei Yuen, General Manager of Rohto-Mentholatum (M) Sdn Bhd. “This partnership embodies our enduring dedication to protecting these invaluable marine habitats.”

Community engagement and coral planting

A key aspect of the project was the direct involvement of Tioman Island’s local community. Sunplay, together with Reef Check Malaysia, engaged 15 local islanders to participate in the coral rehabilitation efforts. The initiative saw the successful planting of 400 coral fragments, crucial for regenerating the area’s marine ecosystems. The project also provided training and job opportunities for these islanders in reef conservation, contributing to both environmental and socio-economic benefits for the community.

The commitment does not stop at planting; local participants will continue to monitor the coral growth and ensure the long-term survival of these fragile ecosystems. This ongoing dedication emphasizes the need for sustained conservation efforts to protect the ocean’s biodiversity.

Launch of Sunplay Ultra Eco-Safe UV Lotion

Alongside its conservation efforts, Sunplay also introduced its latest innovation, the Sunplay Ultra Eco-Safe UV Lotion. Designed with both skin and marine safety in mind, this reef-friendly sunscreen is formulated without harmful chemicals such as Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, which are known to damage coral reefs.

The new product uses non-nano zinc oxide particles to provide broad-spectrum protection against UVA/UVB, Blue Light, and Infrared Light, while being safe for marine life. Sunplay’s proprietary EcoProtect Technology ensures that the lotion offers strong sun protection without compromising the health of ocean ecosystems.

Sunplay’s commitment to environmental protection continues to shine through both its product development and ongoing CSR initiatives, reinforcing its position as a leader in the fight to preserve Malaysia’s marine biodiversity.
