The JB Happy & Joyous Club marked its 16th anniversary with a “Sweet 16” celebration, honouring its mission of bringing joy to the community.
Founded in Johor Bahru, the Club has become a beacon of positivity, particularly through its signature Laughter Yoga sessions.
Club founder Fung Lee Jean reflected, “Oh yeah, 16 years, it’s like sweet 16. So, we are still teenagers!”
The event, hosted in the club’s office in Taman Pelangi, gathered 120 members and supporters, many of whom have been part of the organisation since its inception.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, which impacted participation, the club has seen a resurgence in its weekly activities and daily online laughter sessions, which attract members from across the country.
Laughter Yoga: Promoting wellness for all ages
Since its founding in 2008, the JB Happy & Joyous Club has championed Laughter Yoga, a therapeutic practice developed by Dr. Madan Kataria that promotes mental, physical, and emotional well-being.
The practice, which involves laughing as a deliberate exercise, is now popular in over 110 countries.
“Laughter is the best medicine for mental, physical, and physiological health,” said Lee Jean, Malaysia’s only certified Laughter Yoga Master Trainer.
The club’s work spans hospitals, NGOs, and senior care facilities, where they bring laughter to those who need it most.
Volunteers trained in Laughter Yoga techniques have been integral in expanding the practice, leading sessions for specialised groups like the Breast Cancer Support Group Johor Bahru.
JB Happy & Joyous Club: Looking to the future
With 250 members across Malaysia, the majority in Johor Bahru, the Club plans to expand further.
Lee Jean expressed her vision for a dedicated facility, saying, “We are aiming to have our own building—a single-storey house with space for our activities.”
This future goal aims to make the club’s services more accessible to its members, many of whom are senior citizens.
In addition, the Club hopes to secure funding and collaboration with government agencies to continue its outreach.
Currently, the Club works closely with hospitals, including Sultan Ismail Hospital, where they run monthly Laughter Yoga sessions for geriatric patients.
As the Club looks to expand its joyful mission, they encourage support from the community.
Donations and invitations to corporate events are welcome, as these contributions allow the Club to continue spreading happiness.
For corporate events, they offer a mix of Laughter Yoga, clowning workshops, and even drum circles, making them a popular choice for organisations looking to uplift their teams.
The JB Happy & Joyous Club continues its commitment to bringing laughter and joy to Johor Bahru and beyond, ensuring that their unique brand of happiness reaches even more people in the coming years.
