TERANG 2024: Cultural futurism lights up KL

The Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTiC) is set to dazzle once again with TERANG 2024, a nine-day exhibition from 11-20 October, 2024. T

his event, which runs nightly from 8 PM to 11 PM, brings to life Kuala Lumpur’s historic landmarks through vibrant projection mapping inspired by the theme “Cultural Futurism.”

TERANG, which means “bright” in Malay, celebrates Southeast Asia’s cultural heritage while embracing modern technology.

The exhibition, organised by Filamen, will feature 34 stunning projection mapping artworks, each lasting 1 to 1.5 minutes.

These displays blend traditional elements with futuristic innovation, highlighting how heritage continues to evolve in today’s world.

A fusion of art, culture, and technology

TERANG 2024 promises an immersive experience for art enthusiasts and the general public alike.

Local and international artists will transform MaTiC’s colonial architecture into a dynamic canvas, showcasing a range of creative pieces.

Participating artists hail from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Poland, among others, adding a rich diversity to the event.

Among the highlights is “Future Nature”, a collaboration between Malaysia’s Lling Lling and motion designer Brian Cha.

The piece juxtaposes nature and human-made environments, offering a thought-provoking glimpse into the balance between both worlds.

Zafree Azhar’s “Halimunan: The Invisible Reverie” dives into themes of love and loss, turning the space into a melancholic dreamscape.

On the playful side, Lunartic Studio returns with “Main-Main”, inspired by 80s and 90s arcade games and infused with Malaysian cultural elements.

Jonathan Lim’s “Night of the Cultural Museum” brings Malaysia’s rich traditions to life, imagining a cultural museum that comes alive after dark.

TERANG 2024: Global talent meets local heritage

Not only will Malaysian artists be on display, but TERANG 2024 also features international talent.

Polish artist Ari Dykier and Indonesia’s C.L.V.X are among the finalists from the renowned 1minute Projection Mapping Competition in Japan.

Eltria, a Bandung-based artist, presents “Perseverance”, symbolising Malaysia’s strength through the Malayan tiger and the wau kite, blending both tradition and futuristic elements.

“TERANG 2024 offers a unique platform for artists to reimagine our cultural roots in the modern world,” said Abdul Shakir, organiser of TERANG and co-founder of Filamen.

“We’re excited to showcase works that push the boundaries of how we see heritage, culture, and the future through today’s technology.”

This year’s event invites visitors to actively engage with the exhibits.

The People’s Choice Award allows the public to vote for their favourite artworks by scanning QR codes at the site, encouraging a deeper connection between the audience and the artists.

Professional submissions will be judged by a distinguished panel, including Fasyali Fadzly, a researcher at My Art Memory Project, Ady Setyawan, Festival Director of ITB Light Festival, and Michiyuki Ishita, Creative Director of 1minute Projection Mapping in Japan.

TERANG 2024 also extends to students from institutions such as DASEIN Academy of Art and Universiti Teknologi MARA, further encouraging artistic development within the region.

Following the main event at MaTiC, TERANG 2024 will continue with a special showcase at the Old High Court next to Masjid Jamek as part of the Kreatif KL Festival.

From 30 October to 3 November, award-winning and finalist works from TERANG 2023 will be displayed, offering another chance for the public to experience the fusion of art, heritage, and innovation.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to explore MaTiC’s illuminated spaces and witness the convergence of history, culture, and technology.
