The Great British Circus is set to make history in Kelantan with an all-male show, complying with local guidelines in the conservative state.
Running from October 26 to November 17 in Kota Bahru, this reimagined production will offer a two-hour, family-friendly performance filled with comedy, daring stunts, acrobatics, and dance.
Importantly, no animals are used in the show, which features international performers from over 10 countries.
Co-founder Biliana Kirilova stated, “We have worked hard to create an all-male performance that complies with state guidelines.
We are honoured to bring the Great British Circus in a form that can be enjoyed by all local residents.”
A show like no other
The Great British Circus, known for its exciting acts and family-friendly nature, has been a staple of entertainment in Malaysia since 2014.
This Kelantan debut marks a special milestone for the circus, as it adapts to the state’s unique cultural and religious regulations.
The 2002 ruling by Kelantan’s government, led by the Parti Islam SeMalaysia (PAS), restricts female performers over the age of 12 from performing in front of male audiences.
To adhere to these guidelines, the circus crafted a new performance featuring only male artists.
Despite these changes, Kirilova assured audiences that the show retains its signature thrills.
“We are pleased to bring the same level of wonder, excitement, and fun to the people of Kelantan,” she said.
With stunt acts like the Globe of Death, along with acrobatics and live music, the Great British Circus promises an unforgettable experience for all.
Bringing circus magic to Kelantan
Big Kid Entertainment, the UK-based company behind the Great British Circus, has a long history of circus productions worldwide.
Founded by the Kirilov family, their shows are known for blending traditional circus magic with modern elements, ensuring a captivating experience for all ages.
In Malaysia, the Great British Circus has toured several cities, becoming a beloved fixture in the country’s entertainment scene.
This Kelantan performance reflects Big Kid Entertainment’s commitment to making the circus accessible to everyone, regardless of cultural or religious background.
Kirilova explained, “One of our goals is to make the circus an accessible form of entertainment for as many people as possible, accommodating various segments of society, including differences in language, culture, religion, and economic background.”
The circus also aims to keep ticket prices affordable, with prices ranging from MYR 40 to MYR 120, ensuring that families from all walks of life can attend the event.
