Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has solidified its place as a leading institution, making history as the first Malaysian university to enter the prestigious 201-250 band in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025.
This leap of 100 spots from its previous 301-350 ranking cements UTP’s position as Malaysia’s number one university and the top private university in ASEAN.
This achievement showcases UTP’s commitment to academic excellence, innovative research, and industry collaboration, which have propelled the university’s steady rise in global standings since 2017.
Excellence through collaboration and innovation
UTP’s success is built on a solid foundation of collaboration and innovation.
The university has consistently prioritised partnerships with industry leaders, such as PETRONAS, and academic institutions worldwide.
UTP Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Ir Ts Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, remarked, “This achievement is a source of immense pride for the entire UTP community.
It reflects the dedication of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni. We are grateful for the continued support of PETRONAS and our industry partners, who have been integral to our success.”
The university’s interdisciplinary learning model equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate today’s fast-changing world.
In line with its vision to become a leading energy and technology university by 2050, UTP continues to introduce innovative programmes.
A new engineering programme, aimed at providing students with interdisciplinary skills for the future, will be launched at the THE Campus Southeast Asia Live event in November 2024.
UTP: Commitment to research and future-ready graduates
One of UTP’s key strategies is its focus on becoming a research-led university while maintaining high teaching standards.
As global challenges like climate change and digital transformation evolve, UTP’s research focuses on areas such as energy transition, sustainability, and digitalisation.
“We are working to ensure that our research addresses global challenges and offers real-world solutions that can be commercialised.
By doing so, we contribute to the advancement of society,” Dr Mohamed Ibrahim explained.
As the world continues to evolve, UTP’s graduates are positioned to be at the forefront, equipped with the resilience, creativity, and global outlook necessary for success.
