The Melaka state-level Deepavali Open House will transform Padang Nyiru, near Little India, into a vibrant hub of food, culture, and community celebration on October 27.

The 2024 Melaka Deepavali Celebration, expected to attract over 2,000 visitors, marks a new tradition as the event takes place in the Vehicle Free Zone, welcoming locals and tourists alike to revel in the festival of lights.

“This banquet is a first in the Vehicle Free Zone, with more than 2,000 visitors, including international tourists, expected to liven up the celebration,” said Datuk VP Shanmugam, chairman of the event and Melaka’s State Youth, Sports, and NGO Exco.

The Deepavali Open House will feature an array of Malaysian and traditional Indian dishes, offering attendees a festive dining experience that captures the island’s unique blend of flavours.

With Malaysian-style food complementing traditional Indian delicacies, the evening will offer a taste of cultural diversity that celebrates the richness of Deepavali.

Cultural performances, including those by popular artist Zubir Khan, will add to the vibrant atmosphere.

“Our goal is to create an inclusive atmosphere where everyone can enjoy the beauty and unity of Deepavali,” said Shanmugam.

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh will officiate the open house at 7:30 p.m., underscoring the community’s pride and commitment to promoting cultural harmony.

Community initiatives for underprivileged students

In preparation for Deepavali, Melaka’s community outreach initiatives have focused on supporting underprivileged families.

A recent programme, funded with RM20,000, provided 75 students from 21 Tamil national schools in Melaka with new clothes for the celebration.

This initiative seeks to lighten the financial load for low-income and B40 families, ensuring that every child can participate fully in the festivities.
