In an era dominated by big-name delivery services, 31-year-old Wan Muhammad Hanis Haron has carved out a unique place for himself as an independent delivery rider.
Known as “Wan Runner” to his clients around Seberang Perai, Wan has spent the past two years running his business on his Honda EX-5, equipped with a custom delivery container and thermal box.
His personal touch, competitive rates, and dedication set him apart from major platforms.
Building a business from scratch
Wan’s journey began with selling banana cakes but quickly evolved when he noticed a demand for cash-on-delivery services for local foods, especially during Ramadan when business slowed.
Inspired by his late parents’ entrepreneurial spirit, Wan took matters into his own hands and turned this challenge into an opportunity.
He soon realised that running his own delivery service could be more profitable than joining mainstream platforms.
“I’ve always been interested in business,” Wan said. “My parents were involved in trading, and that inspired me to start something of my own.”
Now, Wan delivers a variety of items, from food to groceries and even live animals, like chickens.
He has built a loyal customer base, primarily through word-of-mouth, and his goal is to earn between RM100 and RM300 each day, working from 8 a.m. until the last order is completed.
Going the extra mile for customers
Wan’s personalised service has earned him a reputation for reliability and warmth. His network of clients includes repeat customers and new referrals.
To expand his reach, Wan actively promotes his services on social media, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and TikTok, as well as through connections within his community.
“I deliver all sorts of things, from wet and dry food to parcels,” he said.
“Recently, I even delivered some live chickens through Airpak Express,” he laughed, recounting one of his more unusual jobs.
Wan also aims to make his services affordable. While larger delivery companies might charge RM7, Wan tries to keep his rates around RM5, prioritising affordability for his customers.
He covers areas such as Kampung Tok Elong, Tanah Liat, Kubang Semang, and Seberang Jaya, providing a range of delivery options that meet his customers’ specific needs.
Challenges on the road and future goals
While Wan takes pride in his work, it’s not without its difficulties. One of the main challenges he faces is the unpredictable weather, which often affects his schedule.
“When it rains lightly, I wear a raincoat and carry an umbrella to protect deliveries. But if the rain is too heavy, I let my customers know and reschedule,” he explained.
Despite the occasional delay, Wan remains committed to delivering on time whenever possible.
Looking ahead, Wan has ambitious plans. He dreams of expanding his operation by hiring additional riders, which would allow him to manage more orders and serve his customers better.
“This is just the beginning. I want to build a team,” he shared.
Wan Runner’s commitment to customer satisfaction and his grassroots approach have helped him stand out in a competitive industry.
By focusing on affordability, flexibility, and personalised service, Wan has built a successful independent delivery business in Seberang Perai.
For those interested in his services, Wan can be reached directly on WhatsApp at 014-5646315.
As he continues to grow his business, Wan remains dedicated to his customers and looks forward to expanding his reach across Seberang Perai, bringing his unique brand of community-focused service to more people.
