Historic Miss Universe top 30 win for Sandra Lim

Sandra Lim makes history as the first Malaysian in 54 years to secure a Top 30 spot at Miss Universe 2024, showcasing elegance and cultural heritage.

Malaysia’s Sandra Lim Shue Hui has etched her name in the nation’s history by securing a spot in the Top 30 at the 73rd Miss Universe competition, held in Mexico City’s Arena CDMX on November 14, 2024. This achievement marks Malaysia’s first placement in the Miss Universe pageant since 1970, when Josephine Lena Wong represented the nation.

Sandra, 24, captivated audiences worldwide with her poise and grace, particularly during the national costume and swimsuit segments. Competing against contestants from 130 countries—the largest participation in the pageant’s history—Sandra’s performance highlighted Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage. Her “Walinong Sari” costume, designed by Ezuwan Ismail, was a tribute to Malaysian folklore, blending elegance with strength through an impressive Wushu performance.

Sandra’s Dedication and Remarkable Journey

Sandra’s achievement is the culmination of years of dedication and preparation. Crowned Miss Universe Malaysia 2024 in September, she underwent an intensive two-month training regime to perfect her stage presence and refine her skills.

“I’m very grateful and honoured to represent Malaysia,” Sandra said. “I have always aimed for a placement, and it has been my dream to make Malaysia proud. This achievement is dedicated to my country, family, friends, the incredible MUMO team, and all my amazing fans who have supported me every step of the way.”

The multi-talented Sandra, also an actress, model, and martial artist, has earned accolades such as a National Wushu gold medal at 13 and the first runner-up title in an international pageant in 2022. Beyond her artistic and athletic accomplishments, Sandra is deeply committed to social causes, serving as an ambassador for Shelter Home For Children and advocating for underprivileged children’s access to education.

Support and Praise from MUMO and Designer

Sandra’s success has been lauded by the National Director of Miss Universe Malaysia Organization (MUMO), Eleen Yong, who said, “We are immensely proud of Sandra for her outstanding performance on the global stage. Her dedication, grace, and intelligence have brought honour to Malaysia. MUMO is committed to supporting Sandra throughout her journey, and we look forward to witnessing her continued success.”

Designer Ezuwan Ismail echoed similar sentiments, adding, “Sandra brought Malaysian heritage to life on stage with elegance and strength, and I couldn’t be prouder. Watching her embody Princess Walinong Sari through her performance was the result of her hard work and dedication.”

While Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer emerged as Miss Universe 2024, with Nigeria and Mexico taking second and third places respectively, Sandra’s placement in the Top 30 has reinvigorated national pride and shone a spotlight on Malaysia’s potential in international beauty pageants.
