The Mutiara LRT Line, a cornerstone of Penang’s ambitious transport future, officially launched with a groundbreaking ceremony at Bandar Sri Pinang, Sungai Pinang.
The project, set to become Penang’s first rail-based transit system, is poised to reshape public transportation and address long-standing issues like traffic congestion.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the event, alongside Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who hailed the occasion as a “landmark day for Penang.”
Chow underscored its significance, stating, “This is the culmination of over a decade of dedication and collaboration.
The Mutiara LRT Line will serve as the backbone of the Penang Transport Master Plan, fostering a sustainable future for the state.”
A game-changer for Penang’s infrastructure
Spanning 29.5 kilometres with 21 elevated stations, the Mutiara LRT Line connects Penang Island to the mainland at Penang Sentral.
Key stations include Permatang Damar Laut, Penang International Airport, Bukit Jambul, and the planned Silicon Island hub, designed to drive economic and industrial growth.
The project will generate thousands of jobs, attract investments, and enhance connectivity for residents.
Set to begin operations in December 2031, it aims to reduce traffic woes while providing eco-friendly transit options.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook highlighted the LRT’s strategic integration into the Penang Transport Master Plan.
“The extension to Penang Sentral and future plans for Tanjong Bunga and Air Itam make this project a benchmark in urban rail connectivity,” he said.
Mutiara LRT: Economic growth and legacy goals
The Mutiara LRT Line is part of the Federal Government’s broader infrastructure investments, including the Penang International Airport expansion and Juru Elevated Highway.
Chow expressed his hopes for the project’s timely completion, noting, “This LRT will leave a legacy of harmony and prosperity, ensuring Penang remains livable and thriving.”
Anwar echoed these sentiments, calling the LRT a “catalyst for economic growth and social unity.”
He assured residents that the Pesta Pulau Pinang site, slated for an LRT depot, would be handled with care, preserving its sentimental value.
The Mutiara LRT Line is more than a transport project—it symbolises Penang’s vision for a sustainable, connected, and prosperous future.
With its transformative potential, the project marks a new chapter in the state’s development.
