Sunway Medical Centre sets four records in robotic surgery

Sunway Medical Centre sets four records in The Malaysia Book of Records for pioneering robotic-assisted hip and knee replacement surgeries.

Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City (SMC) has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing four prestigious records in The Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR), reinforcing its leadership in medical innovation and patient care. The hospital was recognized for being the First Hospital to Perform Robotic-Assisted Total Hip Replacement Surgery and for conducting the Most Robotic-Assisted Hip and Knee Replacement Surgeries in Malaysia.

Adding to the accolades, one of SMC’s leading consultants also set two individual MBOR records: the First Surgeon to Perform Robotic-Assisted Total Hip Replacement Surgery and the Most Robotic-Assisted Hip and Knee Replacement Surgeries performed by a single surgeon. These groundbreaking achievements highlight SMC’s commitment to advancing robotic surgery and providing cutting-edge treatment for patients in need of joint replacements.

Addressing the Needs of an Ageing Population

With Malaysia rapidly transitioning into an ageing nation, the demand for advanced medical procedures is expected to rise significantly. According to the World Bank report A Silver Lining, the proportion of Malaysians aged 65 and above is projected to double by 2044. This demographic shift is leading to an increase in age-related health challenges, particularly mobility issues and joint degeneration, necessitating the need for high-precision surgical solutions.

Robotic-assisted surgery has emerged as a game-changer in orthopaedics, offering greater precision, minimal invasiveness, and faster recovery times. Each procedure is tailored to the patient’s unique anatomy, ensuring more natural results and longer-lasting implants with fewer complications. The success of SMC’s Robotic Surgery and Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) Centre in conducting more than 3,000 robotic-assisted surgeries to date demonstrates the hospital’s expertise in meeting the growing demand for advanced joint replacements.

Revolutionising Surgical Outcomes with Robotics

The benefits of robotic-assisted surgeries extend beyond precision and efficiency. These procedures result in less pain, minimal blood loss, lower risk of complications, and shorter hospital stays, significantly improving the overall patient experience. Commenting on this milestone, Dr. Seow Vei Ken, Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City, said:

“Sunway Medical Centre has always been passionate about embracing the latest technological advancements to improve patient outcomes. Robotic technology, in particular, has revolutionised the way surgeries are performed, and it’s a privilege for us to be at the forefront of this transformation.”

He further emphasised, “It has been a game-changer in surgery worldwide, offering precision, speed, and minimal invasiveness, leading to shorter recovery times and better outcomes for patients.”
