Top Ten Charity Campaign sets RM6.5 million education fundraising target

Carlsberg Malaysia’s Top Ten Charity Campaign targets RM6.5 million to support education facilities, STEM learning and school infrastructure.

Carlsberg Malaysia’s Top Ten Charity Campaign will return in November with a collective fundraising target of RM6.5 million to support education infrastructure and learning facilities at five vernacular schools in the Klang Valley.

The participating schools are SJKC Yak Chee in Puchong, SJKC Bukit Tangga in Rawang, SJKC Chung Hua in Klang, SJKC On Pong 2 in Ampang and SJKC Ladang Regent in Elmina.

Running since 1987, Top Ten is a community fundraising initiative funded by Carlsberg Malaysia and jointly organised with two Chinese-language newspapers. According to the company, the campaign has raised RM601.8 million cumulatively and benefited more than 700 schools and educational institutions nationwide.

Funds target facilities and learning infrastructure

Proceeds from this year’s campaign will support projects including improvements to teaching facilities and multipurpose halls, infrastructure upgrades, auditorium development and the purchase of educational equipment.

Carlsberg Malaysia Managing Director Stefano Clini said the campaign had evolved alongside changing education needs while maintaining its focus on community participation.

“What has sustained Top Ten for nearly four decades is our belief that meaningful change happens when communities come together behind a common purpose,” he said.

Clini also highlighted the changing needs of Malaysia’s economy, saying education would play an increasingly important role as the country moves towards a more services- and knowledge-driven economy.

“More than the proceeds raised, Top Ten is about ensuring quality education remains within reach and equipping the future workplace with the knowledge, skills and confidence to compete in the new-age economy amid AI disruption,” he said.

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh, who delivered the keynote address at the campaign launch, said continued collaboration would help provide students with suitable learning environments.

The campaign has been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the longest-running and highest fundraising charity show in support of education.

Support extends beyond five fundraising schools

This year’s campaign will also allocate RM10,000 to the Dong Zong Chinese Education Complex and Future Education Fund, while RM50,000 will support STEM education advancement at SJKT Ladang Dovenby in Sungai Siput, Perak.

Dong Zong Assistant Secretary General Ng Chai Heng said the organisation would use the support in areas including education innovation, digitalisation, teacher development and talent cultivation.

At SJKT Ladang Dovenby, Parent-Teacher Association Vice Chairman Murthy Vinaigar said the STEM support would help provide students with more opportunities for hands-on learning.

Top Ten’s initiatives have expanded over the years to include tertiary education, schools in East Malaysia and STEM-focused learning.

The campaign also incorporates environmental measures linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13 on Climate Action, including reducing single-use plastics, recycling, waste segregation and encouraging reusable alternatives.

Carlsberg Malaysia said the initiatives form part of its Brewing Tomorrow ESG programme, alongside its stated commitment to SDG 4 on Quality Education.
