Klang Buddhist Association celebrates 65 years, expands Buddhist education programme

The Klang and Coast Buddhist Association (KCBA) has marked its 65th anniversary by strengthening its commitment to Buddhist education, announcing the continued expansion of its formal Diploma in Buddhism programme conducted in collaboration with Sri Lanka’s University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

The initiative reflects a growing interest among Malaysians in pursuing structured Buddhist studies beyond traditional religious practices. Through the KCBA Buddhist Academy, the diploma programme aims to equip practitioners with a deeper understanding of Buddhist philosophy, ethics and teachings while encouraging informed practice and lifelong learning.

The programme has gained momentum since its launch. Following the graduation of its pioneer batch of six students, enrolment for the 2026 intake has nearly tripled to 17 participants.

The latest cohort comprises five Buddhist monks alongside lay practitioners from various professional backgrounds, including retired chief executive officers, medical specialists and lawyers. The growing diversity of participants highlights increasing interest in formal Buddhist education among professionals seeking intellectual and spiritual development.

Community service remains central to KCBA’s mission

Founded in 1961, KCBA has evolved into one of the Klang Valley’s longstanding Buddhist organisations, serving followers from both the Mahayana and Theravada traditions.

Guided by its motto, “Practice Buddhism, Serve the Community,” the association continues to balance religious education with social responsibility through a range of community welfare initiatives.

Its outreach efforts include providing financial assistance to underprivileged families, organising free medical check-ups and conducting regular blood donation campaigns. These programmes have become integral to the association’s role in supporting local communities while promoting compassion and volunteerism.

As part of its future plans, the KCBA Buddhist Academy is inviting applications for its next Diploma in Buddhism intake, scheduled to begin in March 2027.

Association leaders hope the programme will continue attracting individuals from diverse backgrounds who wish to deepen their understanding of Buddhist teachings while contributing positively to society through knowledge, ethical practice and community service.
