World Vision mobilises urgent relief for flood-hit Nepal families

Families in northern Nepal are facing hunger, displacement and uncertainty following devastating flash floods that swept through communities on 26 August, prompting World Vision to launch a 90-day emergency response.

The humanitarian organisation is appealing for US$500,000 (approximately RM2 million) to provide immediate relief and support early recovery efforts in areas severely affected by the disaster.

Floods leave communities facing severe disruption

The flash flood surged into Nepal through the Bhote Koshi River at around 9am on 26 August, severely affecting communities in Rasuwa and Nuwakot.

Homes, roads, bridges and critical infrastructure have been damaged or destroyed, disrupting access to essential services and livelihoods. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing as authorities work to locate missing people and determine the full extent of the destruction.

As of 28 August, more than 390 people had reportedly died, while more than 1,000 remained missing. UNICEF estimates that more than 17,000 children have been affected, with many facing displacement, hunger, interrupted schooling and protection risks.

World Vision said families urgently require food, shelter and essential supplies as the humanitarian situation continues to develop.

Emergency aid to focus on families and children

Under its 90-day response, World Vision plans to provide emergency food assistance, shelter kits, hygiene and essential supplies, as well as child protection support for displaced and vulnerable families.

The organisation said assistance would also extend into early recovery, including support for livelihoods and education to help families rebuild and children return to school.

“The scale and suddenness of this flood have left many families facing immense uncertainty and hardship. As rescue and relief efforts continue, we are committed to helping children and families recover with safety, dignity, and hope,” said Roslyn H. Gabriel, National Director of World Vision International Nepal.
