The schedule remains subject to government approval, the airline notes. Check the booking page for changes before you fly.

Passengers can book through the airline’s website or its mobile app on the App Store and Google Play.

ZG61 lands late at night, so plan your transport from KLIA in advance. The return flight leaves at 1.10am, so travellers check in late the night before.

Since both flights run daily, travellers can plan short trips without the weekday limits of weekly services.

Fares and what they include

Standard fares start at RM1,094 one way from Kuala Lumpur to Narita. The airline announced that sample fare on 23 July.

The ZIP Full-Flat fare was RM2,799 in the same announcement. Fares can change, so check the price on the day.

Each fare includes a 7kg cabin bag. Checked baggage and meals cost extra.

The airline adds no fuel surcharge. It also offers free Wi-Fi through Starlink on board.

Children under six travel on a fixed fare. A seat next to the accompanying adult is free.

In the Japanese listing, Standard Value fares start at JPY 34,900. Taxes and airport charges are extra there.

The Japanese listing also shows a child fare of JPY 5,000. Check the final price at checkout.

The fare finder showed lower prices on some dates in late October and November. Prices there changed with each search.

Why the route matters

Before this launch, Malaysia and Japan had 84 weekly flights and 23,682 seats. The new service adds 2,030 seats a week.

The airline is a low-cost arm of Japan Airlines, founded in 2018. Kuala Lumpur is its fourth Asian destination and its first in Malaysia.

Tourism Malaysia director-general Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim said the route strengthens efforts to attract Japanese travellers. Japan sent 283,132 visitors in the first eight months of 2026.

ZIPAIR president Yasuhiko Fukada said about 630,000 Malaysians visited Japan in 2025. He called the route important for the carrier’s growth in Southeast Asia. He named Indonesia and Vietnam as markets the airline does not yet serve.

The airline now has ten international routes. It already flies to Bangkok and Singapore in the region. It plans a Toronto route within its financial year.

Malaysia Airlines is also adding Japan and Korea links. See our reports on its Fukuoka flights and its Busan flights.
