Lufthansa Frankfurt flights are back at KLIA after nearly a decade. The German carrier launched its new nonstop service to Kuala Lumpur on 26 October. It operates five times a week.

Even so, industry data shows that the airline last served the city in February 2016. At the KLIA launch, Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing welcomed the inaugural flight. He said strong air links are central to attracting more international visitors. The route also lands during the Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 campaign.

Overall, here is the schedule, the aircraft and why the airline says it is returning.

For now, Lufthansa flies the route with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The aircraft has 287 seats in three classes, including the new Allegris cabin. The airline says that cabin offers more legroom and a fold-out leg rest.

Specifically, flight LH705 leaves Kuala Lumpur at 11.55pm and lands in Frankfurt at 6am the next day. In the other direction, LH704 leaves Frankfurt at 9.30pm. It reaches Kuala Lumpur at 4.40pm the following day. The aircraft stays on the ground in Malaysia for just over seven hours between flights.

Why Lufthansa is returning

Lufthansa Airlines chief executive Jens Ritter said the link creates “ideal conditions” for growth in Southeast Asia. In addition, the airline calls Germany Malaysia’s most important trading partner in the European Union.

So the route targets both business and leisure travellers. Aviation news site AGN adds that it aims at premium leisure customers who pay higher fares.

Tiong pointed to the business ties. More than 700 German companies operate in Malaysia, he said. Malaysia recorded 116,824 German visitors from January to August this year.

Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani called such routes “commercially sustainable services”.

He said they strengthen KLIA’s competitiveness. As a result, the airport gains another long-haul option, and Lufthansa gains a foothold in the region.

What it means for travellers

However, the new Lufthansa Frankfurt flights add capacity to a busy market. Tiong said Malaysia has 57 flights a week to Europe, with 16,914 seats. Moreover, Europeans made 1.18 million visits in the first eight months of 2026, up 1.2%.

For travellers, the main gain is a nonstop option to Frankfurt and onward connections across Europe. Reports say that Lufthansa will be the only Star Alliance member to fly nonstop between the European Union and Malaysia. By contrast, Turkish Airlines already offers one-stop trips through Istanbul.

Still, no fares were announced at the launch. So Malaysians planning year-end trips should compare prices with the existing one-stop routes. Elsewhere, other airports are also adding links, as the Haikou to Penang route shows.

In short, the return of Lufthansa gives KLIA a new direct door to Germany. Travellers heading to Germany now have a direct option, since the Dreamliner flies five days a week. Instead of changing in Singapore or Istanbul, they can now fly direct.
