HRP pro-tem sec-gen P Uthayakumar commented on the issue of a 35-year-old market vendor A. Murugan, his wife and mother who were arrested but only Murugan was brought to court Friday (July 16,2010) to face a murder charge.
Murugan was found guilty of murdering his Indonesian maid and sentenced to death.
Uthayakumar said that there has been no history of the Attorney General prosecuting any police personnel for death in detention or by police shootings.
“Our statistics show that 1.3 person has been gunned down by police every week. The numbers for 2002 shows that one person died while under police custody every two weeks and no police personnel has been charged.
