Soldiers from the Royal Malay Regiment’s Gubir camp today foiled an attempt by a Thai woman to smuggle 580 litres of diesel into Thailand using a car.
Padang Terap district police deputy chief, ASP Chang Kut Choy said the 27-year-old woman was stopped for inspection at about 9.30am at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex in Durian Burung.
“She tried to escape arrest but was nabbed by soldiers on duty,” he said, adding that the soldiers had been watching the woman’s movements over several days.
“She was seen frequently coming into and out of this country using the same car.
“During inspection, the car was found to have additional fuel tanks behind the back passenger seat and in the boot,” he added.
It is understood that the woman was involved with a syndicate which previously used pick-ups to smuggle fuel but are now using cars to avoid detection by the Malaysian authorities.
The case has been referred to the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry for further action.
