A total of 641,641 students from 1,525 schools were involved in the READ 2011 programme yesterday, reading simultaneously for 2011 seconds or about 33 minutes and 31 seconds starting 9am.
The programme topped last year’s number of 400,000 students from 1,000 schools that made it into the Malaysia Book of Records.
Deputy Education Minister Dr Wee Ka Siong said the programme added value to the policy to uphold the national language and strengthening the command of language among students, especially in the fields of science and technology.
His text of speech was read out by the Education Ministry’s education technology division director, Rosnani Mohamed Ali, who represented Wee at the launch of the programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Damansara.
At the event, a 1Malaysia Reading Camp was launched to encourage reading habits among students.
READ 2011 was organised by Scholastic (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd in collaboration with the Education Ministry.
The company also contributed 75,000 books to the schools involved in the programme.
