Marco Simoncelli dies in crash at Sepang MotoGP

The MotoGP race of the 2011 Malaysian Motorcycle GP was cancelled after a horrific crash that killed San Carlo Honda Gresini rider, Marco Simoncelli.

The MotoGP race of the 2011 Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix was cancelled after a horrific crash that killed San Carlo Honda Gresini rider, Marco Simoncelli, yesterday.

The decision was made by Malaysian race promoter, Sepang International Circuit (SIC) and Dorna Sports.

FIM medical director, Dr Michele Macchiagodena, announced Simoncelli’s death at a news conference.

He said the 24-year-old rider died at 4.56pm of thoracic and abdominal trauma.

Simoncelli fell and slid on the track. He was then hit by Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Colin Edwards and Ducati Team rider Valentino Rossi at Turn-11.

The race was red-flagged at 4.05pm and Simoncelli was taken by ambulance to the circuit’s medical centre.

Edwards who also fell in the incident escaped serious injuries.
