A pregnant woman fractured her right leg when an elevator car at the Selayang Mall came crashing down, yesterday.
In the 5pm incident, Norazlina Mohd Yusoff, 25, who was seven-month pregnant was taking the lift from the fourth floor to the lower ground floor alongwith six family members.
Norazlina said she and her family members entered the elevator from the fourth floor parking area before five customers joined them on the third floor.
“When the lift stopped on the ground floor, the door failed to open. Suddenly it moved up to the first floor before crashing down to the lower ground floor,” she told reporters at the Selayang Hospital where she was admitted.
Norazlina said security guards and customers came to their aid before she was taken to the hospital by ambulance 20 minutes later.
She said her family members, including her grandmother, and customers, who were with them, suffered light injuries and were given outpatients treatment at the hospital.
Norazlina, a clerk, said she fractured her leg as she tried to break her fall to protect her baby in the womb.
“However, I am thankful that my eight-month old nephew, who was carried by my husband, was unhurt,” she added.
Norazlina’s brother-in-law, Heikal Anuar, 28, lamented that no one from the shopping mall management visited the injured and had not called the police or the Fire and Rescue Department when the incident happened.
Meanwhile, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant operation director Sani Harul when contacted said they were not informed of the incident by the shopping mall management.
He said the department would be contacting them and investigate whether the incident was caused by negligence or other factors.
