Mamak restaurants ‘comparatively cheaper’, says Presma

The Muslim Restaurant Operators Association of Malaysia (Presma) today defended the prices of food and drinks at Mamak restaurants saying they were comparatively lower compared to other restaurants in the country.

The Muslim Restaurant Operators Association of Malaysia (Presma) today defended the prices of food and drinks at Mamak restaurants saying they were comparatively lower compared to other restaurants in the country.

Its president Noorul Hassan Saul Hameed urged the authorities to conduct a study to compare prices at all restaurants operating at the same level as Mamak restaurants.

“We have to look at the cost and other aspects, for example in Bangsar the price of a roti chanai is only RM1.20, very cheap considering Bangsar is a high end place,” he told reporters after attending a Hari Raya alms presentation ceremony at Kondo Rakyat Pantai Desa in Lembah Pantai here tonight.

He said comparisons should not be made with foodstalls as the overheads were different.

“The consumer also has a choice. If a particular restaurant overcharges, the  customer can stop patronising that establisment,” he said.

He was asked to comment on a complaint by a consumer that a Mamak restaurnat recently had charged RM5.00 for a lychee drink which normally does not cost more than RM2.00.

At the function, some 500 single mothers, the elderly, the disabled and orphans received aid of RM100 each which was presented by Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin.
