Forty-eight illegal immigrants from Myanmar, including five women, were detained by 5th Batallion Border Regiment personnel at the Laka Temin farm, about one kilo metre from the Thailand-Malaysian border.

Commanding Officer Col Abdul Rashid Shahdan said all the 48, aged between 21 and40, had used the ‘rat trails’ frequented by smugglers to cross over to Malaysia via Thailand after an eight-day trek through villages and hitching rides from their country.

“They were on their way to Butterworth, Penang to look for jobs,” he told reporters.
