Putra Heights fire sparks animal rescue efforts

SPCA Selangor, SAFM, and volunteers launch swift rescue mission, saving animals and providing urgent veterinary care after Putra Heights fire.

In the wake of the devastating gas pipeline fire that struck Putra Heights on April 1, 2025, SPCA Selangor, together with the Stray Animal Association of Malaysia (SAFM), the Animal Kindness Coalition, and various volunteer groups, sprang into action with an extensive relief operation.

From April 2 to 6, a dedicated team of up to 50 rescuers and volunteers gathered at Kuil Sri Maha Kaliamman, which served as the mission base. The coordinated five-day Search & Rescue mission focused on locating and saving animals affected by the blaze, which had left parts of the community in distress and many pets displaced or injured.

Throughout the operation, the coalition successfully rescued a total of 69 animals, comprising 59 cats, 8 dogs, and notably, 2 pet snakes. These lifesaving efforts were made possible through partnerships with several veterinary clinics, ensuring that rescued animals received immediate and comprehensive care. The mission also benefited from strong community support, including the active involvement of the local assemblyman, temple management, veterinary professionals, and tireless volunteers.

Comprehensive care and veterinary support

Recognising the critical need for prompt medical intervention, the rescue teams established an on-site veterinary booth for urgent treatments, while more complex cases were referred to partner clinics such as SubangVet SS14, Putra Heights Veterinary Clinic, Ministre’ of Pets Veterinary Clinic, and Faith Veterinary Clinic & Surgery. These collaborations ensured that animals suffering from smoke inhalation, burns, or dehydration received professional care without delay.

In addition to medical support, temporary boarding facilities were arranged to provide rescued animals with a safe and comfortable environment. Feeding stations were also set up across affected zones to sustain both stray and owned pets that had become separated from their families. Logistics teams worked tirelessly to maintain smooth operations, from transporting animals to clinics to distributing essential supplies.

Reuniting pets with their owners

Beyond rescue and medical care, the joint rescue effort placed significant emphasis on reuniting lost pets with their owners. The relief team actively assisted residents in locating their missing companions, offering both emotional support and practical assistance. Many heartwarming reunions were witnessed over the course of the mission, offering glimmers of hope to those affected by the tragedy.

For pets still awaiting reunion or adoption, SPCA Selangor and SAFM are continuing their commitment by providing ongoing care and shelter. Furthermore, SAFM has pledged to continue supplying pet food in the coming weeks, ensuring sustained support for both rescued animals and their owners as the community rebuilds.

Community solidarity and ongoing support

The temple management of Kuil Sri Maha Kaliamman, dedicated veterinary teams, and selfless volunteers, alongside the steadfast support of YB Tuan Preakas Sampunathan, Member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly for Kota Kemuning, all played crucial roles in ensuring relief reached the voiceless victims of the disaster and enabled the mission to proceed smoothly and effectively.

The collaborative spirit and rapid response displayed throughout this mission set an inspiring benchmark for future emergency situations. With ongoing care, shelter, and unwavering community backing, the rescued animals now have a renewed chance at life. This concerted effort not only aids in their recovery but also strengthens the bonds within the community, reinforcing the message that compassion extends to all living beings.
