eat X dignity celebrates Peranakan heritage with nyonya Raya feast

eat X dignity celebrates Peranakan heritage this Raya with its Citarasa Nyonya Raya menu, blending authentic Nyonya flavours with meaningful social impact.

The unmistakable rhythm of a traditional Peranakan kitchen often begins with the steady pounding of a batu lesung. Aromatic ingredients—shallots, lemongrass, fresh turmeric and chilies—are crushed together to form the rempah, the essential spice paste that forms the backbone of many Nyonya dishes. The process is slow, deliberate and deeply rooted in tradition.

Authentic Nyonya cuisine has long been regarded as one of the most intricate culinary traditions in Malaysia. Recipes demand patience, precision and a commitment to fresh ingredients, often requiring hours of careful preparation before the food finally reaches the table. From slow-simmered curries to delicately wrapped kuih, every dish carries the imprint of time and devotion.

As Malaysians gather to celebrate the festive season, this culinary heritage once again takes center stage. Beyond the complex flavours—tangy, spicy, savoury and fragrant—the deeper essence of Peranakan cuisine lies in its power to bring people together. At its heart, it is food designed for sharing, storytelling and strengthening family bonds.

This spirit of connection is now being highlighted through a festive culinary offering at eat X dignity, where Peranakan traditions are being celebrated through a special Nyonya Raya menu that blends heritage cooking with social impact.

A labor of love and heritage

Preserving traditional Nyonya cooking methods in a fast-moving modern world is becoming increasingly challenging. The availability of ready-made spice pastes and fusion interpretations has gradually replaced the painstaking techniques that once defined the cuisine.

Yet for many within the Peranakan community, the laborious process remains essential to preserving authenticity.

For Veronica Goh, founder of Setengah Nyonya, the heritage of Nyonya cooking is deeply personal. Operating a home-based business specialising in traditional Peranakan food and apparel, Goh grew up learning the precise techniques of the cuisine from her mother.

She understands that behind every complex dish lies a deeper cultural purpose.

“I think that a lot of people need to like get to know that that hard work that goes into all these food preparations,” explains Goh. “Like when your grandma cooks a meal, it’s not that she wants to show off what she can cook, it’s more of like wanting everybody to come.”

Within Peranakan culture, food serves as an open invitation. Every painstakingly prepared curry, carefully moulded kuih and pot of aromatic broth is meant to draw family and friends back to the dining table. In this tradition, cooking is not merely about sustenance—it is about community, memory and a shared sense of belonging.

Nostalgia in a tiffin: Citarasa Nyonya Raya

That same spirit of gathering and generosity forms the foundation of the Citarasa Nyonya Raya menu at eat X dignity.

Located in Sentul Boulevard, the vibrant café has quietly built a reputation among local food lovers as a hidden culinary gem. For the Raya season, the café has expanded its offerings with a menu designed to recreate the warmth and nostalgia of a Peranakan family feast.

Individual Citarasa Nyonya Raya sets are priced at RM32 and are available for both dine-in and takeaway, offering a convenient yet hearty festive meal. For couples or small households, a special RM88 takeaway set for two is presented in a traditional mangkuk tingkat, or tiffin carrier—a nostalgic symbol of Malaysian heritage that evokes memories of lovingly prepared meals shared across households.

Larger gatherings are also catered for, with a RM180 takeaway set designed to comfortably feed five to seven people, making it suitable for festive reunions during the Raya season.

Empowering youth through purposeful dining

Beyond its culinary appeal, dining at eat X dignity carries a deeper meaning. The café operates as a transformational social enterprise, where meals are prepared and served by youth undergoing professional food and beverage training.

The initiative supports the work of Dignity for Children Foundation, an organisation dedicated to providing holistic education and care to more than 2,200 marginalised and urban poor children in Kuala Lumpur each year.

At the café, the “X” in eat X dignity symbolises collaboration—bringing together communities, mentors and young trainees who are building pathways toward sustainable livelihoods. Every dish served therefore reflects a collective effort to empower youth through skills training while preserving Malaysia’s rich food heritage.

Running from March 1 until April 30, the Citarasa Nyonya Raya promotion offers diners an opportunity to savour traditional Peranakan flavours while contributing to a meaningful social cause. When families unpack the nostalgic tiffin set at home, they are not merely enjoying a festive meal, but participating in a larger story where heritage, generosity and opportunity meet at the dining table.
