Rumah Ozanam receives donation in support of cervical cancer awareness campaign

Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC) recently fulfilled a community service pledge with a donation of RM1,200 to the welfare home Rumah Ozanam, Petaling Jaya.

The hospital had pledged to donate RM10 with every purchase of the specially designed tee shirts to Rumah Ozanam as part of its cervical cancer awareness campaign in January this year.

Rumah Ozanam PJ is a home for young female children aged between 10 to 19 years old. It’s honorary secretary Francis Xavier and administrator Priscilla Joseph received a mock cheque for RM 1,200 presented by Kristine Williams, head of marketing and communications of SJMC.

“Every bit of support is valued and it is gratifying to have SJMC coming forward to do their part for Rumah Ozanam. Given this particular cause is especially relevant for girls, we are also grateful to have the opportunity to help our young residents be more aware of this disease which we understand can be dormant for years,” said Xavier.

The campaign themed “Together, Let’s Eliminate Cervical Cancer #SJMCHPV is an effort to spread public awareness on cervical cancer and educate Malaysian women on the importance of early detection, treatment and prevention through vaccination

SJMC had partnered with local female artist Malar Sinnadurai for the month-long campaign. Malar who is the founder of The Children’s Art Studio, designed the tee shirts that featured a teal-coloured ribbon to symbolize the fight against cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer among females in Malaysia. According to studies one out of every 144 women between the ages of 30 to 75 are at risk of getting cervical cancer. It is is often treatable when detected early.
